Description of Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima

Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima - a historical moment captured forever in a block set from COBI! The "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" block set from COBI is a unique opportunity to travel to one of the most groundbreaking moments of World War II. On February 23, 1945, six American Marines raised the US flag atop Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima.

This legendary scene, immortalized by photographer Joe Rosenthal, has become one of the most recognizable war images in the world, symbolizing unwavering courage, heroism and sacrifice. From February 19 to March 26, 1945, the ruthless fighting for the island of Iwo Jima raged in a storm of fire and conflict.

The Battle of Suribachi Peak, which ended on February 23, was not the end of this battle. In fact, Japanese soldiers, defending themselves by hiding in a dense network of tunnels and bunkers, resisted until the last days of March. Of the U.S. Marines who were forever immortalized in the photograph, three lost their lives as a result of this further brutal struggle.
