The decision on a new aircraft system was taken in the Riksdag in 1982 by the Minister of Defense Torsten Gustafsson in connection with the Defense Decision 1982. The Gripen is one of the first multi-role aircraft that can be used for hunting, attack and reconnaissance missions and also switch between them in flight, hence prefix JAS. First export version of JAS 39C came September 2002. Has been upgraded in several rounds with "Military version 17, 18, 19 and 20" years 2004-2016 with many new modern capabilities. Since 2009, the JAS 39C is a NATO-compatible version of the Gripen with increased resources in the form of armament, electronics, etc. This version can also be air-fuelled. A total of 69 were newly manufactured for Sweden and 17 for South Africa. Of the 69 aircraft that were manufactured for Sweden, the Czech Republic leases 12 and 56 are used in the Swedish air force and one is a test aircraft at Saab.
