The torpedo boat 109 patrol was commissioned in 1942 in the Pacific. On 2 August 1943, the Japanese destroyer Amagiri rammed PT-109 and sank the patrol boat. In a crisis, the unit commander and future President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, managed to save the entire crew. The actions taken made him a war hero! The patrol boat was manned by a crew of 12-17 people. The last mission involved 13 crew members led by Captain Kennedy.
The PT-109 is powered by three Packard 12-cylinder 1,500 hp (1,100 kW) gasoline engines. The speed of the boat was about 41 knots (76 km/h). The PT-109 had a single 20 mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft gun in the rear. On the night before their last mission, the crew installed a 37 mm anti-tank gun in the bow. The boat's main offensive weapon was her torpedoes. The PT-109 was equipped with four 21-inch (53 cm) torpedo tubes containing Mark 8 torpedoes. It was also equipped with two depth charges and twin-linked heavy machine guns. The active operations of PT units in the Pacific and the legend of PT-109 and its commander are still alive today and arouse many emotions. PT-109 can be found in history, literature, film and popular culture.
